IEC 60947-9-1 specifies low-voltage arc quenching devices (AQDs) designed to eliminate arc faults in low-voltage assemblies, like switchgear and controlgear in line with IEC 61439. AQDs create a lower impedance path to redirect the arcing current until a short-circuit protection device (SCPD) interrupts it. They are installed close to primary power sources in the main circuit and are rated for voltages up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC.
