Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) is introducing a new EMI fluorosilicone and announcing that this high-durometer, electrically-conductive elastomer is now part of the Defense Logistics Agency’s (DLA) Qualified Product List (QPL) for MIL-DTL-83528, Type C. The new product, SSP-2573-75, uses fluorosilicone as the base material and is filled with silver-plated copper particles. SSP-2573-75 is capable of 110 dB plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz, has a continuous use temperature range of -55°C to +125°C, and resists solvents and jet fuels. Applications include EMI gaskets for military and aerospace applications.
QPL-83528 EMI Gasket Material
In a letter dated December 13, 2021, the DLA informed SSP that SSP-2573-75 passed qualification testing and has been added to QPL-83528 for specific drawings and material types. The Notification of Qualification is VQH-22-036726. DLA, the combat logistics support agency for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), maintains a qualifying list of manufacturer parts numbers (PNs) that meet the requirements of lettered sections within MIL-DTL-83528, a U.S. military detail specification for electrically conductive gasket materials that provide shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI).
MIL-DTL-83528, Type C EMI Silicone
Within MIL-DTL-83528, Type C materials are fluorosilicones that meet the following criteria:
Shielding effectiveness is defined as the ability of an EMI gasket material to electrically bond a test cover panel to an enclosure flange such that the radio frequency (RF) is attenuated by the factors specified in the standard.
SSP-2573-75 has been tested to MIL-DTL-83528 and to several ASTM standards. For example, this EMI fluorosilicone has been tested to ASTM D412 for tensile strength and elongation percentage, and to ASM D792 for tear strength and specific gravity. A technical data sheet (TDS) is available for download.
SSP-2573-75 is supplied as fully-cured conductive sheet stock, ready-to-mold compounds, and continuous extrusion profiles. This conductive silicone elastomer is tan in color and Made in the USA at SSP’s Ballston Spa, New York manufacturing facility.
