National Automotive Test Tracks (NATRAX), a state-of-the-art testing and certification centre for vehicles in India, will start testing high speed electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers and has planned to set up a certification laboratory for EV charging stations.
NATRAX, which has 15 types of testing tracks, including the world’s fifth and Asia’s longest 11.3 km high-speed test track, is mulling over setting up an advanced testing laboratory for testing electronics in electric vehicles (EVs).
NATRAX director Dr Manish Jaiswal said, “Very soon we will start testing of high speed 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers. We are working on enhancing facilities in the EV segment by adding more specialised facilities and features to test and check EV and charging stations. Presently, we do not have a full range of facilities for the EV segment but we have planned to enhance facilities in a phased manner.”
In the EV segment, NATRAX has started testing of low-speed two-wheelers and three-wheelers like e-rickshaws. Jaiswal said, “We are adding a facility to test electronics in EVs to check electromagnetic compatibility in the vehicles. EV has lots of electronics, almost 30 percent of the components in a car are electronics and to avoid any kind of interference, testing of these components is critical.”
“We have planned a certification laboratory for certifying EV charging stations. EV needs a lot of infrastructure to popularise its usage among common people. We need lakhs of charging stations and this will require a facility to certify these charging stations,” said Jaiswal. “In last 10 months, 90 startups working in EV segment have started working with us. They are using our facilities and advanced technology to test their products.”
Many startups working in the EV segment have collaborated with NATRAX to use the facilities and testing tracks.
