ETS-Lindgren to Present on 5G-NR, EMC, Automotive, and Wireless Topics at IMS 2022712370

ETS-Lindgren announced its technical contributions to the International Microwave Symposium (IMS) 2022, the industry’s most significant microwave symposium, to be held June 19 to 24 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado. ETS-Lindgren engineers will present in the Industry Workshops and MicroApps Seminars Technical Programs as well as support ETS-Lindgren’s Booth #8037 as part of the IMS2022 in-person exhibition.

Hosted by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S), the in-person symposium attracts thousands of global attendees. In pre-pandemic 2019, IMS boasted almost 9,500 attendees from more than 50 countries around the world, as well as a record-breaking 650 exhibiting companies, making it the largest event dedicated to the radio frequency and microwave industry in the world.

Michael Foegelle, Director, Technology Development with ETS-Lindgren, will present in the Industry Workshop “Novel 5G Measurement Techniques in Diverse Environments” scheduled for Tuesday, June 21, from 1:30 to 3:10 pm MDT, in Room 205/207. Together with speakers Aurelian Bria with Ericsson AB and Dennis Lewis with Boeing, Dr. Foegelle will discuss how 5G and emerging wireless technologies are being considered in a wide range of spectrum bands to support a significantly increased user density. With the industry’s adoption of multi-user MIMO, massive MIMO, and mmWave in emerging wireless systems, several worldwide industries and standards bodies face new measurement challenges in New Radio (NR) Over-the-Air (OTA) testing to verify products meet the intended performance parameters demanded by diverse technological requirements.  Applications in diverse environments, such as commercial aircraft and base stations, will be reviewed.  Dr. Foegelle, an active contributor to the 5G wireless industry standards committees, joins Mr. Bria and Mr. Lewis in reviewing test challenges and proposing novel solutions.

ETS-Lindgren’s Jari Vikstedt, Director, Wireless Solutions, and Garth D’Abreu, Director, Automotive Solutions, will present in the Industry Workshop “Emerging EMC Requirements for 5G mmWave Device Measurements” scheduled for Thursday, June 23, from 10:10 to 11:50 am MDT, in Room 205/207.  Invited speakers include Jason Coder with the National Institute for Standards & Technology and Aurelian Bria with Ericsson AB.  The speakers will address the unique challenges 5G NR technology presents to achieving electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for 5G devices and how this is dependent upon the existence of achievable and appropriate regulatory requirements, including meaningful test methods for demonstrating compliance.  This workshop will investigate new developments in test methods focused on meeting the regulatory requirements of the FCC, but with global applications, with presentations concentrating on wireless coexistence and automotive applications.  The speakers will also provide information on emerging radiated emissions test methods and research on utilizing a reverberation chamber test methodology for faster TRP measurements.

The primary body in North America dedicated to developing EMC test methods for wireless and 5G devices, for both licensed and unlicensed transmitters, is the American National Standards Committee C63® (on EMC). With ETS-Lindgren’s involvement in the wireless industry standards published by CTIA Certification™ and 3GPP™, to name a few of the wireless industry standards organizations, as well as the ANSC C63 standards, attendees can be assured of timely and relevant content presented in these Industry Workshops.

ETS-Lindgren engineers will also participate in IMS2022’s popular MicroApps Seminars. Located on the Show Floor Booth #9110, these concise 15-minute presentations provide quick highlights on important topics as follows:

  • On Tuesday, June 21, from 2:45 to 3:00 pm MDT, Mr. Vikstedt will present “Chambers and Positioners for 5G Emissions Testing.”  There are many options for chamber and antenna or device under test (DUT) positioners available to accomplish the varied radiated emissions measurements required for both licensed and unlicensed wireless devices.  The optimal choice for a particular measurement is determined by many factors including, but not limited to, the operating frequency, DUT antenna dimensions, and DUT size.  This presentation will provide an overview of available options and recommendations on their application.
  • On Wednesday, June 22, from 3:15 to 3:30 pm MDT, Dr. Foegelle will present “A New MIMO Over-the-Air Test Methodology Using Dynamic Channel Models and Link Adaptation.” Industry standards for OTA testing of LTE MIMO devices evaluate device performance in a spatially static environment with fixed angles of arrival.  The device is then rotated in the generated test environment to obtain average performance. For 5G, the CTIA MIMO OTA working group is developing dynamic channel models that vary the spatial configuration as a function of time. By allowing link adaptation at the base station emulator, the device can choose the best MIMO or SISO diversity mode and data rate for a given channel condition.  This presentation will summarize the development process and test system requirements.
