IEC 61000-6-1 is a generic EMC immunity standard that specifies EMC immunity test requirements for electrical and electronic equipment used in residential, commercial, public, and light-industrial locations. Currently, the third edition of this standard (IEC 61000-6-1:2016, published in 2016) is available and valid. This standard says that No tests need to be conducted at frequencies where no requirements are specified. This standard is applicable if no relevant dedicated product or product-family EMC immunity standard exists.
The IEC 61000-6-1 standard specifies the EMC immunity test requirements for equipment specified in the scope regarding to continuous and transient, conducted, and radiated disturbances, including electrostatic discharges. This standard covers a frequency range of 0 Hz to 400 GHz. This standard applies to both indoor and outdoor electrical and electronic equipment designed to be operated in residential, commercial, public, and light industrial locations. This standard also applies to battery-operated equipment or powered by a nonpublic, but non-industrial, low-voltage power distribution system if the equipment is intended to be used in the locations mentioned previously.
The IEC 61000-6-1 standard ensures that the equipment possesses a sufficient level of immunity to withstand various electromagnetic disturbances (EMI) from nearby devices. These various EMI include continuous and transient disturbances, both conducted and radiated, as well as electrostatic discharges. The ultimate goal of the EMC immunity standard is to ensure that the equipment can withstand EMI from nearby devices and operate satisfactorily when it is used in its intended real-time electromagnetic environment. In this standard, not all disturbance phenomena have been included for testing purposes, but, this standard covers only those considered as relevant for the equipment.
NOTE 1: Information on other disturbance phenomena is provided in the IEC TR 61000-4-1.
NOTE 2: Safety considerations are not covered in this standard.
NOTE 3: No need to perform tests at frequencies where no requirements are specified.
The third edition (IEC 61000-6-1:2016) supersedes the second edition published in 2005. The third edition features the following significant technical changes from the second edition:
To check compliance with the EMC immunity standard, EMC immunity testing is conducted on the electrical and electronic product or device under test (DUT). In EMC immunity testing, a series of tests are conducted by subjecting the product to the test signals. The test signals simulate the EMI phenomena such as conducted EMI, radiated EMI, surges, Electrostatic discharge immunity (ESD), and other EMI phenomena that the product may encounter when operating in its intended electromagnetic environment.
Here, a list of immunity tests mentioned or test standards that are referenced in the IEC 61000-6-1 document is provided below:
